Wellness, what is it to you?

Let’s talk about wellness. Wellness has become more of a “trend”, but the concept of wellness is truly an important one. Achieving wellness or working toward wellness is a goal for many individuals, although it can prove to be quite a task for some. So, let’s look at some of the various components that comprise wellness to help you create a wellness plan or goal(s) specific to you.

First, consider what comes to mind when you think of wellness? How do you define it? With that in mind, let us look at other definitions. According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, wellness is defined as the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal. Dictionary.com defines wellness as the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

Now, in addition to those definitions, consider what motivates you to be your best self? What do you do (or want to do) to feel calm, comfortable, peaceful, happy…to be well? It is also important to note two key phrases from the above definitions; pursued goal and deliberate effort. I would encourage you to consider adding a variation of one of those phrases to your definition (if you haven’t already done so) to help create your personal plan or goal for wellness. I would also challenge you to consider the small things that contribute to your unique idea of wellness. For instance, does taking a walk during lunch help you have a better day? Does spending 5-10 minutes alone before you start your day contribute to making that day great? Are you in a better mood when you listen to music or when you read an inspirational quote? Do you sleep better at night when you meditate or do yoga before bed?

Try to think outside of the box here; sometimes it is the little things that make a huge impact! For instance, reading for fun and relaxation, having, or developing close relationships with others, asking for help when faced with problems or challenges, prioritizing physical activity weekly, or saving for retirement are all examples of wellness.

Wellness is a unique, personal journey; not everyone will have the same ideas or plans. Take all of the above considerations, add any additional ideas that you deem fit and create your own personal wellness plan or goals. Focus on your own sense of wellness and lean into whatever that is for you! Pursue those wellness goals, make the deliberate effort to achieve your own personal wellness!
